Why Hope for Brighter Tomorrows?

Wholistic Healing, Hopeful Futures

Hope for Brighter Tomorrows was established to expand the mental health ministry of Kay Warren, combining two of her passions: ministry to hurting parents and mental health guidance for local churches.

  • Founded by Kay Warren, a mother who deeply understands what it's like to raise a child with mental illness.
  • Created to wholistically address the needs of caregivers through in-person and online programs.
  • Designed to provide practical training and tools for churches eager to engage in lifegiving care for vulnerable families affected by mental illness.

BREATHE Together Marriage Event

Rick and Kay Warren cordially invite the parents of children (of any age) who live with mental illness to a one-day marriage enrichment event called BREATHE Together, on August 23, 2025 at the beautiful Rancho Capistrano Retreat Center. While marriage itself can be challenging, the profound stress of parenting a child with mental illness can result in significant emotional, relational, physical, and communications breakdowns with our partners. This can all leave us feeling isolated and unsupported, which is the opposite of God’s design for marriage. We invite you to embrace a day of respite to turn toward your spouse, find community with other couples walking a similar journey, and come away with a renewed sense of hope as you breathe together. Come worship, laugh, cry, and reflect with us through Rick and Kay’s candid teaching, great worship, interactive workshops, and fun activities. We can’t wait to be with you!

2025 BREATHE Retreat

The BREATHE Retreat is a restorative retreat for moms of children (of any age) with mental health challenges. The gentle, slow pace of the weekend is designed to renew and replenish the body, soul, and spirit of weary moms. The retreat offers personal counsel from a mental health professional, focused prayer, the calming experiences of Christ-centered yoga, aromatherapy, and a variety of creative expressions designed to bring pleasure and peace. Our teacher and host for the weekend, Kay Warren, shares her personal story of parenting a child with serious mental illness, as well as the wholistic practices she adopted and implemented while journeying with her son, Matthew. The retreat also offers the opportunity to connect in community with other moms walking this journey.

“I could go on forever with praise about the retreat! The time spent with the BREATHE Mamas, Alumni, and the entire team was a sacred experience in every way. The divine welcome, hospitality, scenery, prayer house, praise and worship, fellowship, workshops, table projects, accommodations, activities, holy yoga and breathing, counseling, and endless "hidden treasures" with the BREATHE gift bags, surprise letters, butterfly release, and personalized gifts and prayers were all incredible! I'm still soaring and soaking up all the beauty and blessings from this anointed event! The light of Christ was shining brightly and eternally through every part of the retreat. Such a miraculous, mountain-top weekend overflowed with hope and healing in body, mind, and spirit to anchor and sustain us in Jesus' love, grace, promises, peace, and resurrection power for our journeys!”

“I felt instant love and care from the team, feeling seen and known. I connected with strangers who became immediate friends and sisters, and I was surrounded by beauty everywhere. The excellence poured into every detail of planning and executing the retreat was evident. The worship teams led me to the throne room, and every session had so much value to me.”

“I felt very alone over the last few years trying to navigate the mental health crisis with my child. I didn’t know where to turn, and I was exhausted mentally, physically, and spiritually. This retreat renewed me and gave me hope and strength to continue on this difficult journey. It brought me back to my source of strength, God, and allowed me to realize I don’t have to do this alone. I can invite God to walk alongside me and lean on other moms for support.”

“My son has been an IV heroin and meth addict for 24 years. I've had to let him go so many times that I feared I'd never feel connected to him again. The guilt I felt over failing him was, at times, more than I could bear. At the BREATHE retreat, I found peace and hope—not in my son's healing, but for his healing. I left with a more intimate relationship with the Lord. Thank you to everyone involved—this weekend was the kindest gift I've ever given myself.”

“After a very traumatic and chaotic past 15 months with my daughter, I was a bag of dry bones and didn't think I'd have the capacity to receive anything from God or anyone else. I couldn't have been more wrong. From the moment I stepped on the campus, I was embraced, cared for, truly seen and heard, and felt so highly valued. It honestly felt like a dream. Every mother who has a child experiencing severe mental illness needs to begin her healing journey with this incredible weekend. It's like nothing I've ever experienced (even after being in ministry for over 10 years!), and the encounters with the Living God were life-changing and powerful. The BREATHE Team and volunteers are beyond amazing, and I flew home feeling rested, renewed, encouraged, and hopeful. I can't recommend this healing and hope-filled weekend enough.”
